Greyhounds Currently Residing at Our Sanctuary

Heidi, 1997-2010

Our first Sanctuary dog arrived on July 17, 2008.  Heidi suffered from severe skeletal issues resulting from a racing injury that broke both hocks when she was 3. The injury fused her hocks at nearly a 90-degree angle, forcing her to walk awkwardly on callouses.  With her racing career over, she was retained and bred for over 7 years. As is common with older Greyhounds, Heidi also has periodontal disease.

Heidi developed very strong shoulders as compensation for the reduced function of her hind legs. She was always happy and had a huge presence.

Heidi died from complications resulting from osteosarcoma.

Talulla, 2002-2010

Talulla was surrendered to the local greyhound rescue group Greyhound Companions of New Mexico (GCNM) because her adopters were no longer able to care for her. She had developed epilepsy a few years earlier, and a cascade of other problems developed in the process of treating her seizures. Talulla came to us as a GCNM foster in January, 2010 and became an official Sanctuary dog in June of 2010.

Siya, 1994-2008

Siya was our inspiration for a sanctuary. She was 9 years old when she came to us, a retired brood. She had been overbred and suffered from bad teeth, partially as a result of losing calcium from her teeth.

Spider, 1997-2010

Heidi’s littermate brother, Spider came to us a month after Heidi arrived. Spider suffered from badly infected teeth and almost immediately had surgery to remove all but three of his teeth. He bounced back quickly - but even without teeth, he was not cat-safe!

After several months we found a wonderful home for him where he lived happily and surrounded by love until he passed.

Talulla required ongoing medical management for her seizure disorder, and had scarring of her kidneys. Although she was not in frank renal failure, she had been losing blood and protein in her urine. After several months of testing and working with her medications, we had her seizures under control and were working on maintaining her kidney function. We expected her kidneys to eventually fail, but thought she had at least another year before that happened.

Lucy Lu

Lucy Lu came to us from a local family who was no longer able to keep their sweet girl in their home.

Lucy was very sad when she first arrived - a very sensitive girl, she felt the losses in her life very deeply. She settled in quickly, however, and was clearly happy with the presence of other greyhounds in the home.

After she started feeling more comfortable, she began to show the stronger side of her personality - she has a large presence despite her small size (about 58 pounds at last weighing).

We went through the usual veterinary workup and Lucy is in excellent health for her age (approximately 9 years old), although she (like so many greyhounds) did have some dental issues and lost 4 teeth.

Today she is settled in and is a happy girl!

Audy

Our current Sanctuary dog Audy came to us from a woman who was no longer able to keep her.

Audy is 13-1/2 years old and critically ill as a result of an untreated infection in her teeth. She has bacteremia and dangerously low red and white blood cell counts, and her kidneys may be damaged. She weighed only 45 lbs when we got her on January 8, 2012!

We are working on getting some weight on her and treating her infection with antibiotics. We started with oral antibiotics, which were causing tummy upsets. So we switched to injectables and are seeing success with that approach. We also discovered that her kidney function was such that we had to supplement with subQ fluids to keep her body well hydrated and flushed. Finally, we started her on ulcer meds (sucralafate) to help heal her uremic ulcers.

She is responding well - has started playing with toys and even demanding food when she is hungry!

Top photo was taken on the day she arrived; bottom photo is 5 days later - looking alert and relaxed!
